Green shopping
Building a sustainable community
SVS is committed to creating a better environment, upholding ethical trading, and working with others to tackle climate change, the greatest threat to our global population.
We're continually trying to reduce our carbon footprint. Our motto is - live local - buy local - shop local. There are many advantages in shopping local, not least in supporting local suppliers and the regeneration of our rural economy. Shopping locally means less miles travelled; buying local produce means less food miles created in the products distribution. This all means less pollution and fewer carbon emmisions are created. This ethos is fundemental to SVS, and we aim to reduce our emmisions in everything we do.
SVS promotes the reuse of carrier bags, supplying only used bags to customers. The intention is to phase this out and supply a shopping bag made from recycled materials to encourage customers to use a bag for life, and not discard bags after every shop. We will also be working with our suppliers to reduce the overall use of packaging and explore ways whereby we can create smarter distribution systems throughout the countryside.
Living local enterprise
The important stuff
Sulgrave Village Shop Association Limited (SVS) was incorporated in July 2004 as an Industrial Provident Society, owned by residents of Sulgrave, with the object of operating a shop and Post Office. Under its constitution profits are not for distribution to its members but must be reinvested in the enterprise for the continuation and development of its services to the community. The shop began trading in September 2004 under the direction of a management board employing a full time shop manager and supported by some 50 volunteers.
Rural enterprise network
As part of a newly established Rural Enterprise Network, SVS, by selling locally grown and sourced products, seeks to provide a focus for other producers and suppliers to develop and expand locally based businesses.
