Sulgrave Village Shop was voted Best Rural Retailer in the southern region by the Countryside Alliance. Our shop was also nominated by the panel of judges in the The Observer's Ethical Retailer Awards, which subsequently led to Sulgrave Village Shop being featured on ITV's Tonight with Trevor McDonald.

Carrot cake
- Cooking time: 1¼ hours - 1½ hours
- Ingredients: Cake: 400g self raising flour, 2 tsp baking powder, 1 tsp bicarbonate of soda, 1 tsp mixed spice, ½ tsp ground ginger, ½ tsp ground cinnamon Topping: 225g cream cheese, 10ml clear honey, 225g stork margarine, 225g light brown sugar, Grated rind of 1 orange, 4 lg eggs, beaten, 175g sultanas, 400g carrots peeled and finely grated, Strips of orange zest to decorate
- Instructions
- Pre-heat the oven at 180°C/ Gas mk4. grease and line a 23cm round cake tin. Sieve the flour, baking powder, bicarbonate of soda and spices into a large bowl. Add all the remaining ingredients except the carrot and beat until well mixed, abour 1 - 2 mins. Add the grated carrot and mix until well combined.
- Spoon the mixture into the prepared tin and bake for 1¼ - 1½ hours until a skewer inserted into the centre comes out clean. If necessary cover with foil towards the end of cooking. Leave to cool in the tin and then turn out onto a wire rack.
- For the topping, beat the cream cheese and honey together, spread on top of the cake and decorate with the thin strips of orange zest.
